It's a general misconception people have, that 30 minutes of recording takes 30 minutes to transcribe. We speak much faster than we can actually write or type. It's generally accepted that we speak four times faster than we can type and seven times faster than we can write.

The industry standard* allows TWO hours to transcribe 30 minutes of clearly recorded speech. It therefore takes a MINIMUM of 4 hours to transcribe a one hour recording depending on a number of factors detailed below. The following timings for transcription of a one hour recording are based on years of experience in the business and relate to transcription time, NOT recorded hours.

Dictation, one-to-one research interviews, lectures, telephone interviews, pod casts, web casts - between 4 to 6 hours.

Focus groups, meetings, conference presentations, group interviews, teleconferences, vox pops - between 6 to 10 hours.

All Video recordings, time stamps added to transcripts, or all participants identified by name for groups - between 7 to 10 hours.

The type of transcript customer requires has an impact on timings. The timings above are based on Intelligent Verbatim transcripts as that is the most cost effective option. If a customer requires a Complete Verbatim transcript, that will add approximately 1 to 3 hours to the transcription time. An Edited Transcript adds between 1 to 2 hours. Poor quality recordings will increase the time even further.

The Transcriptionist’s Office is now open to serve your
transcription needs. We could do your transcripts as long as you can
send your digital audio files to us through e-mail two or three days
before the time you need them and we will give you satisfaction
guaranteed that these are proofread and formatted the way you want it.

We offer general transcription. If you have meetings, conferences,
interviews and documentaries with no overlapping of voices that you want
transferred to text, we can do these for you.

Our services include transcription, research and editing meaning we give
the transcripts as client-ready. And if you have background information
on the topic that would facilitate the research for the transcriber,
that would be better.

As long as your audio material is crystal clear with no background
noise, things will be a lot easier for the transcriber to accomplish the
task. Our turn around time (TAT) is usually 48 hours for an hour’s
worth of audio, depending on the quality of the audio. If the audio has
poor quality and the accent is difficult to understand, it may take more
time to finish.

So make sure that you record your meetings, conferences, interviews and
documentaries in a place where there is no distraction, no noise and let
everyone be heard on the microphone. If speakers are far from the mic,
they won’t be heard on the recording and you will miss out on a lot of
important information or questions. If the person has a soft voice, let
them approach the microphone and allow them to speak up. This will give
you an assurance of good quality transcripts.
